Nestled in the northernmost part of India lies the enchanting region of Kashmir, often referred to as "Paradise on Earth." While the entire valley is a visual treat, there's a hidden gem within Kashmir that is a trekker's paradise - the Great Lakes of Kashmir. One such epic journey is the 7-day trek from Sonamarg to Naranag. Our teams consist of 16 people from different background. Mostly otai-otai dalam group kali ini.
Day 1: Sonamarg - The Meadow of Gold
Our journey begins in Sonamarg, 2 hours and 30 minutes’ by van from Srinagar. Sonamarg which translates to 'Meadow of Gold.' This picturesque town is surrounded by lush green meadows and towering snow-capped peaks. We arrived around 3.00pm. After we set up the campsite we start trekking to Thajiwas Glacier Viwepoint arounf 3-4km it takes 1-2 hours. Orang kata salam pengenalan kepada KGL ini. We camping at Shitkadi Campsite next to the Singh River. As the sun sets behind the mountains, you'll realize why Sonamarg is called the Meadow of Gold.

Day 2: Nichnai Pass
Today, we head towards Nichnai Pass, our first high-altitude challenge. We carried only a daypack bag every day, while 1 more bag was carried by the horse. The rest of the stuff was managed by the crew, which included 1 guide, 1 sweeper, 1 chef, and 6 horsemen. The trail takes us through lush meadows and dense forests, offering glimpses of Kashmir's diverse wildlife. The pass itself is a mesmerizing sight, with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

As we climb higher, the trail becomes steeper and the air thinner, making the trek more challenging. This significant elevation gain of 1094 meters can pose a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It's crucial to maintain a steady pace, stay hydrated, and take regular breaks to acclimatize to the altitude. Our guide will be closely monitoring everyone's condition to ensure safety.
Reaching Nichnai Pass at an elevation of 3637 meters is a rewarding experience. The pass is a mesmerizing sight, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The sense of accomplishment and the breathtaking scenery make the effort worthwhile. Rest and Acclimatization: A good night's rest is essential for acclimatization and recovery. Our tents provide a cozy and sheltered space to relax and rejuvenate for the days ahead.

As we descend from the pass, we are greeted by the stunning Vishansar Lake. The pristine waters, surrounded by wildflowers, are a sight to behold. You can spend your day exploring the area or simply soaking in the tranquility of this remote paradise.

As we descend from the high-altitude pass, the landscape begins to transform dramatically. The rocky terrain gradually gives way to verdant meadows dotted with wildflowers, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors. The air is crisp and refreshing, filled with the scent of alpine flora.
Upon reaching Vishansar Lake, we all be captivated by its sheer beauty. The lake's crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding snow-capped peaks, creating a mirror-like surface that seems almost surreal. The vibrant wildflowers along the lake's shores add splashes of color to the scene, enhancing the natural splendor.

Day 4: Krishansar Lake and Gadsar Pass
Our journey continues to Krishansar Lake, another jewel in the Kashmir Great Lakes crown. From there, we ascend to the Gadsar Pass, known for its challenging terrain but equally rewarding vistas. The landscapes here are surreal, with turquoise lakes, vast meadows, and rugged mountains stretching as far as the eye can see.

As we leave Vishansar Lake, the trail winds through lush meadows and along streams, leading us to the enchanting Krishansar Lake. The trail gradually ascends, and the terrain becomes more challenging as we approach Gadsar Pass. The breathtaking scenery and the sense of adventure make this segment particularly memorable.
Day 5: Satsar Lakes
Day 5 of our trek takes us to the enchanting Satsar Lakes, a collection of interconnected alpine lakes surrounded by vibrant alpine flowers and rugged rocky terrain. This day offers a mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural celebration as we navigate through diverse landscapes and mark Malaysia's Merdeka Day on the trail. The Satsar Lakes are a series of seven interconnected lakes, though not all are visible simultaneously. These lakes, with their tranquil waters and vibrant floral borders, offer a peaceful and visually stunning setting.

One of the highlights of the day is crossing a river on horseback. This thrilling experience adds an element of adventure to our journey. The horses, expertly guided by the horsemen, carefully navigate the flowing waters, providing us with a safe and unique way to cross the river. After the river crossing, the trail begins a steep zig-zag ascent. The switchbacks require careful navigation and a steady pace. The climb is challenging but rewarding, as each turn reveals more of the stunning landscape. Wildflowers dot the path, adding splashes of color to the rocky terrain.
As we trek, we take a moment to celebrate Malaysia's Merdeka Day. In the spirit of unity and freedom, we pause to hoist the Malaysian flag, sing the national anthem, and share stories of independence and heritage. This cultural celebration adds a special significance to our journey, making the day even more memorable. During our ascent, we are treated to a breathtaking view of Nanga Parbat, one of the world's highest mountains. The sight of its snow-capped peak towering above the surrounding landscape is awe-inspiring.

Day 6: Gangbal Lake - The Crown Jewel
On the penultimate day of our trek, we journey to Gangbal Lake, often regarded as the crown jewel of the Kashmir Great Lakes. Known for its size and beauty, Gangbal Lake offers a serene environment for reflection and relaxation. The majestic Harmukh Peak in the background further enhances the grandeur of this destination, making it a highlight of our adventure.

We start our day with anticipation, leaving the peaceful Satsar Lakes behind. The trail initially leads us through rocky terrains and verdant meadows, providing a mix of challenges and scenic beauty. The early morning light casts a golden hue on the landscape, creating a magical atmosphere. The path soon becomes more demanding as we encounter sections of steep, rocky climbs. These areas require careful navigation and physical endurance. The rocks are uneven and at times loose, making it essential to watch each step and use our hands for balance and support.
Throughout the day, we experience a significant elevation gain of 503 meters and a descent of 657 meters. The constant change in elevation keeps the trek engaging and offers varied perspectives of the stunning landscape. As we ascend, the air becomes thinner, and the views become more expansive, revealing the vastness of the region.
Gangbal Lake, the largest and most beautiful of the Kashmir Great Lakes, is a place of serenity and natural beauty. The majestic Harmukh Peak, standing tall in the background, adds to the lake's grandeur and offers a dramatic backdrop.

Day 7: Naranag - Journey's End
Our final day of trekking leads us to Naranag. As we descend from the high altitudes, we experience the serene beauty of Harmukh Peak at dawn, traverse clear rivers, and share the trail with local sheep, culminating in a steep and exhilarating descent into Naranag.

Morning at Gangbal Lake:
We wake up to the stunning sight of Harmukh Peak bathed in the soft light of dawn. The early morning views are breathtaking, with the peak standing majestically against the clear sky and its reflection shimmering in the calm waters of Gangbal Lake. The tranquil setting provides a perfect opportunity for morning reflection and photography.
After breakfast, we begin our final trek. Leaving the serene Gangbal Lake behind, we embark on a trail that initially takes us through rolling meadows and gentle slopes. The air is fresh and crisp, filled with the sounds of nature as we make our way towards Naranag.
The descent into Naranag is steep and challenging, requiring careful navigation and steady footing. The trail winds through dense forests and rocky paths, offering a thrilling end to our trek. The dramatic drop in elevation of 1291 meters keeps us focused, but the views and the sense of adventure make the effort rewarding.
Day 7’s trek to Naranag marks the end of an incredible adventure through the Kashmir Great Lakes. The stunning morning views of Harmukh Peak, the clear river crossings, the steep and exhilarating descent, and the cultural richness of Naranag create a perfect conclusion to our journey. This final day encapsulates the beauty, challenge, and cultural heritage of the trek, leaving us with memories of a lifetime and a deep appreciation for the untouched beauty of Kashmir.
